The announcement coincides with his election to the National Association addiction treatment providers
ANGELS, November 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Behavioral Health Discovery, Inc., a growing network of evidence-based mental health, addiction and eating disorder treatment centers, is pleased to announce the appointment of a seasoned industry leader Jennifer Carvalho as Chairman of the Substance Abuse Division. Carvalho reports directly to the DBH COO James Bailey.
Carvalho’s appointment coincides with his election to the board of directors of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, effective January 1stst2023. NAATP is the behavioral health industry’s trade organization, which advocates for methods, results, research, and education in matters of law, policy, funding, and regulation that have an impact on drug treatment delivery.
With more than two decades of industry leadership, Carvalho most recently served as Vice President of DBH’s SOUTH Division and CEO of Casa Palmera, an addiction and mental health treatment center in Southern California which is part of the DBH family of brands. His professional experience also includes serving as CEO of Azure Acres Data Center at Sonoma County.
“Jen’s work in patient access to care, stigma reduction and workforce development is known throughout the behavioral health industry, and her speaking engagements in audience and sharing her own recovery experience has been an inspiration to dozens of patients. We welcome Jen as a new member of our leadership team,” says Peloquin.
Carvalho’s vision for mental health in his two new capacities is focused on creating additional access to care through policy and technology. “Our ability to navigate the changing behavioral health landscape is critical to addressing the growing national mental health crisis. Ease of connectivity creates access to care, and we do this through outreach efforts that enable patient-centric treatment pathways, whether through a digital platform or hospital departments,” she says.
While her two new roles at DBH and NAATP have a lot in common, she identifies different challenges for each organization. “At Discovery Behavioral Health, my team’s goals are operational. I am focused on professional development and the allocation of resources that drive success. Our strategic initiatives are developed in accordance with our core values - to provide the best possible clinical care and extend this care to everyone seeks it.
“With NAATP, we work on behalf of a national membership of providers. They rely on us to reduce barriers to success, to create fair pathways to achieving results. By guiding legislation, workforce development- and parity efforts, we are able to effect change for the industry, allowing DBH and other providers to have a clear path to delivering excellent care,” she says. .
While the growing opioid crisis must be among the nation’s highest health priorities, Carvalho notes a recent National Institute of Health report finding that one in five adult deaths in the United States today can be attributed to Alcohol consumption.
“As a nation, we have yet to recognize or accept the full impact of alcohol in how we have come to terms with the opioid or fentanyl crisis. Alcohol is readily available, legal and socially acceptable “Therefore, treatment for its abuse should be equally available, acceptable and effective. And we do ourselves a disservice by focusing on a single substance – the disease of addiction is persistent and deadly. Our efforts must be individualized and always focused on the primary diagnosis,” she says.
