The MHIF raises the funds needed to build the center. Children’s Hospital is contributing $15 million and $16 million is expected from the American Rescue Plan Act. The rest will be made up of donations. In an exclusive TV interview with KETV NewsWatch 7, Stinson described the need for a comprehensive mental health facility that treats kids on the subway. The project, he said, predates the pandemic. However, he said the need for these resources was exacerbated by COVID-19. “We’ve had an incredible reception because people understand the problem,” Stinson said, adding that none of the donors they approached turned down the opportunity to invest in the project. “They understand that we are underserved in terms of facilities and the ability of facilities to deal with mental health issues. And if they can, they are ready to help and they want a solution.” The 103,500-square-foot facility will be located on the main campus of Children’s Hospital & Medical Center at 84th Street and West Dodge Road. It will have 38 inpatient hospital beds, double the number in the Omaha area. It will also have an emergency behavioral health assessment center. “It means children can stay in our state to receive care,” said Chanda Chacón, President and CEO of Children’s. “It’s going to be transformational.”
