Hundreds of people turned out for the Expo City Dubai sports and fitness weekend on Saturday, November 12, as part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC). A number of children and adults showed up to participate in the Expo Run.

One of them was Dr Ellie McCarthy, who arrived with her husband Chris and her children, Aidan, 14, and Beth, 11. While Ellie took first place in the 15k race, Beth came in first in the 3k race. Aidan was ranked second in the same. “My husband was an elite runner, so the family was passionate about running,” she said.

“However, we did not expect to win the race. I thought I could get a spot in my age group, but I didn’t expect to win.

Dr Ellie credited the DFC with inspiring her to stay in shape. “I work at King’s College Hospital and during DFC we were encouraged to take part in as many activities as possible,” she said.

“With everything going on during the month, it’s the perfect excuse for us as a family to get out and exercise. We live near Kite Beach so every weekend we visit and participate in several activities.”

Besides running, there were several different activities on the Expo site. The Surreal Water feature hosted several outdoor classes during the morning.

Lillian Zahra Mirsafavi was one of those teaching yoga there. “The weather was perfect and the sky was super blue,” she said. “The class energy was fantastic. Everyone was so enthusiastic, I really enjoyed myself.

The Briton said DFC was a great motivator. “I’ve taught a few classes and taken some at various fitness centers around town,” she said.

“It’s so amazing to be able to get out after the long summer. Plus, with so many activities going on around, it’s great motivation for people to try new things and find new passions that they can carry with them beyond a month.

Towards evening, the entire Al Wasl Dome turned into one giant gym. With bootcamps, Zumba classes and breathing masterclasses, there was something for everyone.

Friends Elsa and Annita had driven to Expo City from their home in Al Barsha. “It’s not often you get the chance to exercise at Al Wasl Plaza,” Elsa said.

“So we didn’t want to miss this chance. I also went to the DIFC fitness center.
