AIDS Healthcare Foundation ( AHF ) today condemned criminal interference by big pharma in negotiations over the World Trade Organization’s proposed TRIPS waiver, which would have allowed more countries to produce vaccines against COVID-19.

According to POLITICO, “Between January 2020 and September 2022, 13 lobby groups and pharmaceutical companies held nearly 100 meetings with top officials. [European] Commission officials. In the UK, there were over 360 meetings between January 2020 and March 2022, or nearly one every two days. Conversely, civil society groups advocating for vaccine equity only met with EC officials about 60 times and had only 20 meetings in the UK. From 2020 to 2021, big pharma and the biggest lobby groups have spent more than €30.7 million lobbying the EU during the pandemic.
“We knew the pharmaceutical industry – namely the big three COVID-19 vaccine makers, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna – had a stranglehold on politicians around the world, but this survey reveals how far they will go to do put profits before people’s lives. . AHF has advocated for vaccine equity since the pandemic began, including hosting multiple protests at Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J headquarters. Many AHF country teams have also sent letters to wealthy country embassies seeking support for the proposed WTO TRIPS waiver.
